The history of the department of medicinal chemistry dates back to the division of pharmaceutical chemistry founded in 1939. The discipline Medicinal Chemistry hosted by the department is recognized as one of the first national key disciplines. We are also one of the first departments in China that can award master's degree and doctoral degree in medicinal chemistry, approved by the State Council. Over more than half a century, generations of famous medicinal chemists such as Wang Dianxiang, Lei Xinghan, Huang Lansun, Peng Sixun (an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering), Liao Qingjiang and Duan Tinghan, et al, have engaged in teaching and scientific research work here. Further, medicinal chemistry of our school ranked the third in the world and first in Asia on the subject list of the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) 2022. It has become the cradle for training scientific and technological talents for new drug innovation in research institutions and in pharmaceutical industry.
Our department has a total of 56 faculty and staff, including 44 full-time faculty members.. 23 of them are professors and 21 are associate professors.
In recent years, the department has hosted 8 academic conferences, such as the World Symposium for Chinese Medicinal Chemist and the Cross-Strait Medicinal Chemistry Symposium, etc. The department has research collaboration projects with a large number of renowned institutions, including Harvard University, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Hopkins University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Minnesota, etc. It has provided 3 English courses for international students, and more than 10 international postgraduate students are studying here.
